The new Consumer Protection Bill 2019 was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The bill proposed that if a celebrity makes an advertisement and that advertisement is misleading or making false promises, then strict action would be taken against the stars. The bill has also been passed in the Lok Sabha. Soon, the Consumer Protection Act 1986 will be changed.
According to the bill, the Central Consumer Protection Authority will take care of the protection of the consumers. The CCPA will investigate if any complaints are submitted. If a customer faces any loss, the stars who performed in the ad will be fined up to 1 lakh rupees.
Besides that, according to the bill, the authority also has the freedom to ban the advertisement for two years. The CCPA may even order the stars to be jailed. The stars could be jailed for at least five years. Customers can also claim compensation in case of loss.
According to the bill, MRP has to be clearly written on the goods. Also, the date of expiry has to be mentioned clearly.
