However, director Yash Chopra originally wanted the lead roles of Smita Patil and Parveen Babi opposites Amitabh Bachchan but he insisted that the roles presented by Rekha and Jaya. That was because the off-screen affair between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha made headlines at that time.
When Silsila Flopped At The Box Office :
We see the film Silsila as a classic today as we look back at it. The fact is that the film failed at the box office. The directorial for Yash Chopra was made in Rs. 2.5 Crore, but the film could only earn Rs. 1.25 Crore in the box office. It was a big shock at the time because even the hit cast was unable to avoid the failure of the film in the boxing office.
Yash Chopra’s Wife On Silsila Failing At The Box Office :
Pamela Chopra, Yash Chopra’s wife said in a report of Times Of India, “The marriage is a very, very sacred institution in India, and when the director created sympathy for the two lovers who were willing to go outside their marriage and continue their love affair, he didn’t carry the audience with him.”
Amitabh Bachchan And Rekha’s Last Film Together :
At that time Amitabh Bachchan was already one of Bollywood’s biggest stars when Silsila was released. Amitabh Bachchan was married to Jaya Bhaduri at that time, and he promised her not to work with Rekha anymore. However, for Silsila, Amitabh Bachhan agreed that filmmaker Yash Chopra wanted Rekha to play his lover’s role and narrated the film. Because of this film rumours of his affair with Rekha began to make rounds again.
Amitabh-Rekha Relationship:
Amitabh Bachchan was a married man when Rekha and Amitabh met on the Do Anjaane set first. They fell in love and kept their connections a secret, but the media was aware of it when Rekha entered at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor’s wedding with a mangal sutra and sindoor.
Jaya Bachchan called Rekha for dinner and said she’s not going to ever leave her husband. Rekha even said later in an interview why Amitabh Bachchan refused the relationship. She said he was protecting his image, his family and his children. She also explained why the public should know about Rekha and Amitabh’s love. According to Zoom Entertainment, she said in an interview, “I love him and he loved me – that’s it! If he’d reacted that way towards me in private, I would have been very disappointed.” Rekha also said that Mr Bachchan is old-fashioned and didn’t want to hurt anybody, so why would he hurt his wife?
